How Environment Shapes Learning

When a plant isn't growing, you check the soil first. Why don't we do the same for our children?

A good gardener doesn't blame the seed. They look at the light, the water, and the soil. Children aren't so different. Join Head of School Michael Rombola and Rose Else-Mitchell, Teaching Fellow at Harvard's Graduate School of Education, as they explore the environments that help children thrive at school and at home.

This is how we already run our school

We keep our classes small, so no student gets lost in the crowd. That's a big part of why families who enroll tend to stay.

One hour. Five practical takeaways you can use.

01

What's shaping whether your child engages with school or checks out

02

Why your child's attention works more like a small desk than a filing cabinet, and what that means for phones, multitasking, and homework

03

The real difference between studying and learning, and why rereading notes feels productive when it mostly isn't

04

A short home audit you can run this week, focused on one change you'll stick with

05

How your child's school and home fit into a much bigger picture of how they learn

This is for you if…

Something about how your child's doing at school feels off and you can't quite put your finger on it

You're trying to build better habits at home without turning into the homework police

You're a teacher or tutor looking for a sharper way to talk with families about this

You're weighing up schools and want a real framework to judge them by

You'd rather go with the research than a gut feeling

The experts you'll be hearing from

Michael Rombola
Head of School, Score Academy Miami

Mike has a Master's in Education from Penn. He started out in Title I schools in West Philadelphia as a Job Coach and Adult Literacy Instructor, work that shaped how he thinks about school. He's run programs in Philadelphia, New York, and internationally, was CEO of Chester County Family Charter School, and most recently led Fusion Academy Miami. He knows this city and its families well.

Rose Else-Mitchell
Teaching Fellow, Harvard Graduate School of Education

Before Harvard, Rose spent twenty years building some of the most widely used learning programs in American schools, first at Scholastic, then as Chief Learning Officer at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. She now chairs the Industry Council at the EdTech Evidence Exchange, which exists to check whether education products work. She started out as an English teacher in Sydney, Australia, so this isn't theoretical for her.

Live presentation and Q&A

A few things people often ask.

Do I need to be worried about my child to get value from this?
No. This is about environment and how learning actually works, not diagnosing anything. It's useful for any family.
Does this apply to younger children too, or just older students?
The research applies broadly, but Rose's focus tonight is on older students, roughly middle school and up.
What if I can't attend live?
Register anyway. Everyone gets the recording within 48 hours.
